Dear Mr. Taylor:
JPartlow
SUBJECT:
DATA ON DECOMMISSIONING TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY AND COSTS As discussed with your staff, Westinghouse Hanford Company (formerly UNC Nucicar Industries) is performing data collection surveys for the NRC on actual reactor decomissioning activities.
This will broaden the NRC information base on the technology, safety and costs associated with l
decommissioning to assist in the implementation of regulatory requirements.
Currently, there is considerable interest in the safe storage (SAFSTOR) alternative for decomissioning because it is expected that many reactor i
licensees will choose this option until there is a high level waste repository for disposal of the spent fuel.
l We would appreciate Dairyland Power Cooperative's (DPC) help in allowing the NRC through its contractor, Westinghouse Hanford Company, to collect relevant information on the La Crosse BWR decomissioning activities. Mr. Dennis Haffner of Westinghouse Hanford will contact you on the particulars of this effort.
Once access to appropriate raw data are made available, Mr. Haffner and his l
staff will do whatever manipulations are necessary to structure this I
information in a useful form. Moreover, this information will be made available to DPC and we will not publish the formal report derived from this information without your review.
If anything requires further clarification, please contact the NRC Program Manager, Dr. Carl Feldman Lt 301/492-3883 the NRC Project Manager, Peter Erickson at 301/492-1126 or Denny Haffner of Westinghouse Hanford at 509/376-4378. A copy of a recent sumary report on decomissioning by our contractor is provided for your information.
