'NDOM OF INFORMAT10B Washington, D.C.
20555 ACI REQUESI foIA -f 7-7(a5 November 10, 1987 kg
Dear Sir or Madam:
On Sept. 18, 1986, there was a spill of Americium-241 in Building 4060 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. There was another spill of Americium-241 in the same building on Oct.
6, 1986.
We are hereby requesting under the provisions of the Federal Freedom of Information Act all records related to these incidents, as well as to any Air Force personnel connected with them and/or with the cleanup of the spills. Further, we are requesting all records related to how the Americium-241 got onto the base.
This request includes, but is not limited to, the "Faded Giant" report prepared by the Air Force in connection with the incidents.
If there are any fees associated with the reproduction of the records requested, please inform me before you fill the request.
As you know, the amended act permits you to reduce or waive the fees if it "is considered in the public interest because furnishing the information can be considered as primarily benefiting the public."
Since the information is sought for publication in the Dayton Daily News and Journal Herald, I believe this request plainly fits that category and ask you to waive any fees.
If the request is denied, please cite the specific exemption and explain to me your appeal procedures. I expect to hear from you concerning this request within 10 working days, as required by law.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely DA) TON NEWSPAPERS,1NC.
