MEMORANDUM FOR: Singh S. Bajwa, Acting Director Project Directorate I-1 Division of Reactor Projects I/II, NRR FROM: Gerald H. Weidenhamer Electrical, Materials and Mechanical Engineering Branch Division of Engineering Technology, RES

SUBJECT:

TEST DATA FOR NIAGARA MOHAWK POWER CORPORATION The attached letter, dated January 31, 1997, from Mr. M.J. McCormick, Jr., requests data from some of the NRC sponsored tests on pressure locking of motor-operated gate valves. The letter states that the data will be used by the licensee to support their evaluations and preparations for a predecisional enforcement conference with NRC Region I. Since I am the RE5 project manager for the pressure locking valve tests, the request was addressed to me.

I am attaching the data, in the form of two disks, for your use in responding to the request. Please note that Mr. McCormick requests the data be sent directly to Kalsi Engineering. Inc. 745 Park Two Drive. Sugar Land. Texas, 77478.

A sketch of the instrumen*ation arrangement (Figure 3) installed on the valves for the tests and a listing of the instrumentation channels (Table 1) are also attached and are necessary for understanding the data. In addition, the process for loading the data files is attached.

It is suggested that a disclaimer notice be included as part of the response to Kalsi Engineering and to the licensee. The following is offered as a possible candidate:

"The attached disks were prepared from work sponsored by an agency of the United States Government. Neither the United States Government nor any agency thereof, nor any of their employees, makes any warranty, expressed or implied, or assumes any legal liability or responsibility of any third party's use, or the results of such use, of any information disclosed on the disks, or requests that its use by such third party would not infringe privately owned rights."

l PROCESS FOR LOADING DATA FILES The data files contained on disks 1 and 2 are in DADiSP Labbook format. They have also been compressed using the PKZIP software.

To load the data files into DADiSP, first run DADiSP and create new Labbooks having the same name as each data file. Note that the 'D" at the end of the file name indicates DADiSP format and is not part of the Labbook name.

I Example: For file name V3002D. ZIP, create Labbook V3002 i

i Next, exit CADiSP and enter the DOS subdirectory matching the newly created Labbook.

! Example: CDC:\DSP\V3002 l

Finally, " unzip" the data 'ile that matches the Labbook name. PKZIP will question if you want to ove. write the INDEX.PI file - you must answer YES.

i Example: PKUNZIP A:\V30020. ZIP j The data should now be loaded into the DADiSP Labbook and available for i analysis.
