PASS STATUS REPORT 12/28/87 SUMMtMY Tha PASS is designed to sample the following three items:

1) Reactor Beilding Atmosphere
2) Decay Heat System
3) Reactor Coolant System The Reactor Building Atmosphere sampling capability was tested by STP (Special Test Procedure) 4' d 2 end verified the system functioned properly. The test results have been appreved.

The Decay Heat System sampling capability was tested by STP.430. Two Non Conformance Reports were written on the sample dilution acceptance criteria.

TM "prs, which have ' een dispositioned and approved, accepted the sample di 'ef.1w results. The test has been placed in the results review cycle. The test o ustrated the ability to draw a Decay Heat System sample, analyze the sample or boron and chloride, dilute the sample and transfer the sample to a grab sample flesk and the Intrinsic Cermanium Element (IGE). The inline conductivity and pH instraentatfor, are being tested by STP.1131 (Liquid Sample DepressurizaHea aid Total G6:, Test).

The Reactor Coolant System sampling capability will be tested by STP.433 which is on hold pending incorporation of initial Test Working Group (Tt'G) comments. The procedure will be rewritten based upon the results of STP.430 and STP.1131 but it will not be performed until the reactor is at 15% power so that the liquid sample will be at $ts maximum temperature. The ability of the system to depressurize and degas a liquid sample will be tested by STP.1131.

SYS )! MODIFICATIONS There are a total of three open Engineering Change Hotices (ECNs). The status of each is as follows:

A-47111 ADD BACKUP SOURCE OF FLUSH AND COOLING WATER A minor change is being made to install unions in two lines to allow removal of flow monitors for maintenance. Release of this l ECN ic, pending performance of STP.433.

R-0285 RFPLACE DECAY HEAT SYSTEM SAMFLE VALVES Repair and testings of the leaking valve are complete. Minor pipe support work is required after which the ECN will be l released.

R-0559 THE SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS SKID (SCAS) CHANGES The conductivity and pH monitor s have been replaced and additional lighting installed in the vicinity of the SCAS. A modification has been done on the gas / liquid separator section of the system and there is a minor change pending on the hookup of the new multichannel analyzer. Release of this ECN is pending-performance of STP.433 TESTING In addition to the three primary Special Test Procedures described in the

SUMMARY

there are six additional tests. Three have been performed and three are approved and awaiting performance. The status of each is as follows:

STP.426 SAMPLING TIMES USING THE PASS This procedure has been approved. It will measure the times required to perform gas and liquid sampling. The results of this STP will be used for determining expected doses while using the PASS following an accident.

STP.428 MEASUREMENT OF (SCAS) VOLUMES A AND B This procedure has been performed and test results approved. STP.428 determined the ratio of volume B to volume A which is used as part of the calculation for determining the total gas in a liquid sample.

STP.793 HYDR 0 GEN MONITOR / PASS HEAT TRACING FUNCTIONAL TEST This procedure has been performed and the results approved.

STP.1131 PASS LIQUID SAMPLE DEPRESSURIZATION AND TOTAL GAS TEST This procedure has been approved and performed. This STP verified the ability of depressurize and degas a liquid sample. The result of the total gas determination did not meet the acceptance criteria and there were several test deficiencies which did not affect the acceptance criteria. The error in the total gas measure.mnt is believed to be the result of not allowing the test liquid to stabilize at the required pressure before drawing a sample. A retest of the procedure will be performed to verify the total gas measurement and resolve the other test deficiencies.

STP.1136 PASS REACTOR BUILDING ATMOSPHERE SAMPLE SIX CYCLE TEST This procedure is approved and is scheduled to be performed this week. It will document the performance of Chemistry Procedure CHM-6005 for sampling the reactor building atmosphere six times.

STP.1137 PASS LIQUID SAMPLE SIX CYCLE TEST This procedure is approved and is scheduled to be performed this week. It will document the performance of Chemistry Procedure CHM-6001 for sampling the RCS/DHS six times.

SURVEILLANCE PROCEDURE Surveillance procedure (SP 907) for the monthly testing of PASS has been drafted and is undergoing informal review.

CHEMISTRY PROCEDURES There are five Chemistry procedures associated with the PASS. All have been approved.

TRAINING All Chemistry Technicians have received four hours of formal classrooa training. Procedures CHM-6001 (PASS liquid sampling) and CHM-6005 (PASS containment atmosphere sampling) are approved and are being used for hands-on training of six Chemistry Technicians.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE The PM program development is in progress.

SPARE PARTS Nuclear Engineering developed a list of spare parts and submitted it to the Procurement Group. The majority of those parts are on order. The order for a portion of the parts is on hold pending additional ordering information.

NRC INSPECTION NO. 87-26 Action has been taken on two items of concern expressed at this and previous inspections. The first item, NUPAC Shipping Cask labeling, has been closed, and the second item concerns lead blanket shielding.

PASS LEAD BLANKET SHIELDING l The lead blankets have been labeled as permanent shielding and a small cable has been used to tie the blankets together. With these two actions complete this item is now considered closed.
