SUBJECT:

COMPARISON OF GE AND NRC CRITICALITY CALCULATIONS OF THE MODEL 700 PACKAGE CONTAINING 10 MTR FUEL ASSEPSLIES AND 20 MTR FUEL ASSEMBLIES GE calculated a keff of 0.9236+0.0075 for 10 MTR fuel assemblies in the flodel 700 (June 7.1985) and aleff of 0.88725+0.00446 for 20 MTR fuel assemblies in'the Model 700 (August 7. 1985).

He have asked GE to resolve this discrepancy (September 4. 1985).

In anticipation of this resolution. I am reporting NRC's homogeneous calculations l

for the cases (enclosed input and output).

I a.

for 10 MTR assemblies: keff = 0.889,+0.006 b.

for 20 MTR assemblies: keff = 0.957+.,0.007.

Since there is a 100% fissile mass increase between a. and b., we can assume 1/4 of 100% or 25% increase in keff if the system were a spherical geometry; since we have stacked 10 assemblies on top of another 10. one must take 1/3 of 25% or 8.3% is expected on the change of keff or:

=7.4%$ calc.versus8.3%(expected).
