February 13, 1986 Docket No.

50-335 MEMORANDUM FOR:

Ashok C. Thadani, Director PWRFrojectDirectorate#8 Division of PWR Licensing-B FROM:

Donald E. Sells, Project Manager PWRProjectDirectorate#8 Division of PWR Licensing-B

SUBJECT:

TRIP REPORT COVERING VISIT TO ST. LUCIE SITE FOR GENERIC ISSUE A-45 On January 23, 1986, a visit to the St. Lucie site was made to answer questions related to the staff's review of Generic Issue A-45 with respect to St. Lucie 1 only.

This was the follow-up visit of the initial visit made in December 1984.

The morning session consisted of a discussion period to answer the questions contained in the enclosed memorandum dated January 6 1986 and supplemented in the memorandum dated January 14, 1986.

AllquestIonswereaddressedand specific areas of the olant were identified for purposes of conducting a visual inspection in t1e afternoon.

It was determined that there was no need to enter the radiological control area (RCA) to obtain information dealing with the diesel generator exhaust system and diesel oil storage tanks since the information could be obtained from drawings and visual inspection from outside the RCA.

Other areas visited included the cable spreading room, the switchgear room, auxiliary feedwater pump room, and the intake cooling water area.

An area on the North end of the site was identified as the most likely area for use to install additional residual heat removal equipment.

Additional drawings were obtained from the licensee and emergency operating procedures were reviewed.

The visit ended at midafternoon with a short exit meeting in the office of the plant manager.

Sandia laboratory is now prepared to complete its review of the information and complete its report covering the A-45 issue for this site.

No significant problems were identified and a relatively clean report is anticipated.

An initial draft of the report should be available for PWR-B review within a few months.
