Gentlemen:
Based on the results of Inspection 50-277/86-08 and 50-278/86-08 at the
Peach Bottom Nuclear Station, we note that certain aspects of your fire
protection program remain to be completed to fully confirm 10 CFR 50.48 and,
specifically, Appendix R,Section III G and J.
This matter was discussed
during a telephone conversation between Dr. Johnston of my staff and Mr. Logue
of your staff on t.pril 7,1986.
With regard to the matters discussed, we understand that you have undertaken
or will undertake and complete the following actions:
1.
Complete the Appendix R Safe Shutdown confirmatory program on or before
September 30, 1986.
2.
Upon completion of the program, provide the Office of Nuclear Reactor
Regulation and Region I, a copy of the Fire Protection Evaluation Report
(FPER) which will contain the results of the subject study.
3.
Promptly inform dP9ivn i by telephone, followed by a written report,
whenever a violation of Appendix R, III G or J requiremer'ts has been
identified during implementation of the confirmatory prog,am.
4.
Complete the Alternative Shutdown modifications for Unit 2,.
and common
modifications for Units 2 and 3 in order that both are operational before
restart from the next refueling outage.
If our understanding of your planned acti.ons described above is not in accor-
dance with your actual plans and actions being implemented, please notify me or

The responses directed by this letter are not subject to the clearance proce-
