Annual Radiological Environmental Surveillance Report Gentlemen:

Enclosed is the Annual Radiological Environmental Surveillance Report for the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station. This report contains a summary and analysis of the radiological environmental data collected for calendar year 1985.

Several samples collected as part of the radiological environmental monitoring program indicated detectable levels of man-made radionuclides in cow milk, sediment, estuary water, and marine algae. In no case were the levels of radionuclides possibly related to plant emissions high enough to l result in public intake in excess of one percent of those that would result from continuous exposure to concentration values listed in Table II of Appendix B to 10 CFR 20.

The Cs-137 and Cs-134 levels detected in sediment were determined to be the result of a combination of nuclear weapons testing fallout and early plant l operation (prior to the installation of a diffuser for liquid effluents), and j have been discussed in previous reports. Tritium was detected in two estuary l water samples at the plant discharge outfall and was related to plant operations. Marine algae samples collected during June and July from the l

control location showed detectable levels of I-131. An investigation showed l

that the I-131 entered the area from the sewage treatment plant outfall in Boothbay Harbor, and was not related to plant operations. g I 7385L-SDE [i, B604070266 860401 /

These levels were similar to those found in the past and have previously been shown to originate from nuclear weapons testing fallout and to vary from farm to farm primarily as a result of diffeYences in the animals' diets.

Direct gamma radiation exposure using thermuluminescent dosimeters showed no significant increase in exposure rates at the inner ring of stations, the outer ring of stations, or at the control stations.
