l SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT (SQN) UNITS 1 and 2 SPECIAL REPORT 97-03 Description of Condition On May 29,1997, SQN started a planned outage to modify the High Pressure Fire Protection (HPFP) System. Fire barriers were impaired to provide backup fire protection capabilities in accordance with technical specifications before removing the system from service. Fire barrier penetrations and fire doors were removed from service on or after May 23,1997 to allow for routing of fire hoses.

Cause of Condition The fire protection system was impaired to implement modifications for the upgrade of the HPFP system.

Immediate Actions In accordance with technical specifications a fire watch was established after the fire detectors ,

on one side of the fire barrier were verified operable. The fire watch was maintained until 3e fire barriers were returned to operable status. The fire barriers were returned to service on on before June 11,1997.
