l MOP POWDER URANIUM RECOVERY ROTARY VACUUM FILTER A Rotary Vacuum Filter (RVF) is being installed at the Siemens Manufacturing Plant in Richland, Washington, to remove inert solids from uranyl nitrate solution. The solids are
" dirt" removed from the floor during normal cleaning operations in the conversion areas.
The RVF is a right circular cylinder,18 inches in diameter and 12 inches wide, fabricated from 3/16 inch thick stainless steel using all welded construction. During operation, the cylinder rotates around a two-inch diameter center shaft. The cylinder's outside edge is divided into six equally-sized sections 7/8 inch deep by 9.4 inches long by 12 inches wide.
These sections look like small pans on the cylinder surf ace whose bottoms are the cylinder's outside wall and whose tops are a polypropylene filter cloth. Each of these sections forms a separate small filter that has a one inch drain pipe extending from the A coating of diatomaceous earth (DE) is applied to the cylinder surface to the center shaft.
polypropylene cloth and the DE becomes the actual filter media for the slurry to be filtered.
During filter operation, a vacuum is applied to the filter center shaft. The vacuum extends from the center shaft through the one inch pipe drains to the seoarate sections at the I
cylinder surface. The cylinder is partially submerged inside a shallow tub that contains the slurry to be filtered, and the cylinder is slowly rotated in response to the vacuum, liquid in the tub passes through the DE and the polypropylene filter cloth, flows through the one inch pipe to the center shaft and then into an evacuated filtrate receiver tank. Solids in the slurry deposit on the surface of the DE as the cylinder rotates, a water spray washes soluble materials through the filter DE, and then air is pulled through the filter to dewater the solids deposited on the DE. The air enters the evacuated filtrate receiver tank with the liquid, and the air and the liquid are separated. Air flows to a vacuum pump and the liquid is pumped an ambient pressure filtrate collection tank. Solids deposited on the cylinder are cut off the DE surface with a knife. The solids are collected in small containers and are washed for additional uranium removal, or if the solids uranium concentration is low enough, the solids are disposed of as low level radioactive waste.
The filter cylinder interior is isolated from the center shaft and the one inch connecting piping, and is not evacuated. The ' cylinder is, however, a potential void that could collect uranyl nitrate solution if a leak occurs in the cylinder or the filter piping. The filter center section is filled with a silicone rubber compound that contains sand and boron carbide to prevent liquid from getting into the filter cylinder during operations, and to provide some neutron absorber to aid criticality safety.
