UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 May 19, 2020 Mr. John Sauger Executive Vice President Chief Nuclear Officer Reactor D&D EnergySolutions 2701 Deborah Avenue Zion, IL 60099
SUBJECT:
ZION NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 - DISCONTINUATION OF GROUNDWATER MONITORING PRIOR TO LICENSE TERMINATION
Dear Mr. Sauger:
By letter dated October 9, 2019 (Agencywide Document Access and Management System (ADAMS Accession No. ML19288A067), ZionSolutions, LLC, requested concurrence from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for termination of the groundwater monitoring program at Zion Nuclear Power Station (ZNPS). By letter dated November 5, 2019 (ML19303C215), the NRC staff determined that the proposed termination of the ZNPS groundwater monitoring program was acceptable.
Subsequently, you identified a commitment in ZNPS Technical Support Document (TSD)17-004, that groundwater sampling would continue until license termination and a reference to that commitment in the NRCs safety evaluation approving the License Termination Plan (ML18164A222). You notified us of a change to that commitment in TSD 17-004 on May 11, 2020 (ML20136A404). This letter is to confirm the NRCs acceptance of the groundwater monitoring performed to date as satisfying the commitment for groundwater monitoring until license termination.
Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me at (301) 415-3017 or via e-mail at john.hickman@nrc.gov.
Sincerely, John. B. Hickman, Project Manager Reactor Decommissioning Branch Division of Decommissioning, Uranium Recovery and Waste Programs Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards cc:
