On July 8,1983, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) received Generic Letter 83-28," Required Actions Based on Generic Implications of Salem ATWS Events."
Carolina Power & Light Company's response for the Brunswick facility was forwarded to your office on November 7,1983. In Appendix C of that submittal, we provided action plans and sche &les for the improvement programs as discussed in that response.
In item 9 of Appendix C, Brunswick committed to review vendor and engineering recommendations regarding safety-related equipment other than the Reactor Trip System (Section 3.2.2 of Generic Letter 83-28). The purpose of this review was to ensure that appropriate test guidance is included in periodic test and maintenance procedures or the Technical Specifications where required. To accomplish this task, CP&L initiated a review of information supplied by our Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) vendor as well as other suppliers of safety-related equipment.
In our initial response, Brunswick anticipated that this task would be completed by the end of 1985. However, due to subsequent limitations on the resources applied to this task, a portion of this task will extend through 1986.
Our efforts have focused in two areas: 1) General Electric (GE) recommendations affecting the NSSS, and 2) non-GE information from vendors supplying replacement parts for safety-related systems and equipment. The GE recommendations concerning the NSSS have been transmitted by Service Information Letters (SIL), Field Disposition Instructions (FDI), and to some extent Service Advice Letters (SAL). Information from other vendors has been in the form of drawings, technical manuals, and installation, operation and maintenance instructions as well as other forms.
As of the end of October 1985, GE had issued 597 SILs including supplements and revisions. The Brunswick plant has completed action on 531 or 89% of these. The remaining 66 arc in various stages of implementation. Cencral Electric has issued 302 FDIs relevant to Brunswick Unit I and 364 FDIs for Unit 2. Of these, Brunswick has completed action on 286 (95%) and 349 (96%), respectively. General Electric has issued 77 SALs with possible application to Brunswick. Subsequent review determined that 38 of these were not applicable to Brunswick. The remaining 39 SALs are in various stages of evaluation or implementation. Brunswick considers verification of SALs to be approximately 60% complete.

-Mr. D. B. Vassallo Page 2 Brunswick has contacted 154 vendors of safety-related equipment requesting technical information/ recommendations on a total of 767 parts. Vendors have indicated that no information or no updated information is available for 160 of these safety-related parts.
Information has been received on 233 parts and CP&L has downgraded 20 parts to non-safety-related. When the plant obtains the remaining information, Brunswick will process it for incorporation in plant maintenance procedures and technical manuals as appropriate. Brunswick considers this portion of the project to be approximately 50%
complete.
We anticipate that completion of the relevant GE SILs, FDIs, and SALs issued through the end of 1985, as well as completion of obtaining and incorporating other vendor information, will be accomplished by the end of 1986. At that time, CP&L will submit a summary of the program results.
