Dear Mr. Mcdonald:

SUBJECT:

REFUELING WATER STORAGE TANK CHECK VALVE INSERVICE TESTING -

JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 By letter dated September 16, 1985 you requested written confirmation of Alabama Power Company's (ACPo's) understanding of the relief granted by our November 15, 1984 letter. The APCo understanding is that relief was granted to either (1) disassemble the RWST check valve or (2) perform a test which will demonstrate equivalent flow through the check valve. The relief was granted for tests during the refueling outage in lieu of ASME Section XI Code Section IWV-3522 requirements of every cold shutdown.

We have reviewed your request as well as our previous evaluation and relief which was granted by our November 15, 1984 letter. The test methods as described above and in your June 1,1984 letter are acceptable. The test interval, every refueling outage, is acceptable. This letter serves only as confirmation of previous relief we granted for your proposed methods and schedule for the subject check valve testing.

Sincerely,

/s/SVarga Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #1 Division of Licensing cc: See next page ORB #1:DL 0 ..L 1:DL l CParrish EReeves;ps Varga 10/gD/85 10gJ/85 1 1
