' \L.J ' INTRODUCTION .
' ~ , * ~
This report presents the results of the environmental ,
. stress program performed on the different instruments (herein called test modules) required for the LaSalle County Nuclear Power Station. This str'ess program -
comprises of the different type tests for the environ- . mental qualification of safety relared instruments required by the IEEE-323-19 74 Standards,- cs i=plemented ,
. by the Regulatory Guide.1.89. Cualification of class . lr Equipment for Nuclear Power Plants. , /
t Some of the test modules, herein presented, had already
' undergone the stress program under the Wm. H. Zimmer . , Nuclear' Power Station requirement. However, these test modules were still subjected to further :est since they now varied in the location (=est of these are now inside the secondary containment). The above said modules were only subjected to the loss of coolant accident conditions (LOCA).
For those test modules not listed on the Wm. H. Zimmer Project, they were subjected to successive environments of elevated temperature, radiation, accelerat'ed opera-tional cycling, seismic and vibration exposures, accident radiation and a simulated accident exposure to elevated temperature and relative humidity.
~ -The performance of all the test modules were m< nitored either during or after each type test and then sere co=-
Pared with the baseline data obtained during the initial
.- functional test. '

. tion data. - b. Ins =ection and Functional Tests . .
- 1) The test module, its accessories and shipping were
. . visually inspected to insure that there was no .
damage incurred during handling and delivery.
, 2) The test item was then mounted in a panel as described '
in paragraph 2al.
. 3) With no pcwer to the relay, the contactor centinuity was determined using a VOM., , .
- 4) .The timing head was set to 1-0 seconds.
5') lWith a voM connected to the contactor, voltage was . applied to the input terminal.
, 6) The time delay before the activation of the switch I was measured using a calibrated stop-watch and com-pared to the setting.
( 7) The data ebtained and the results were documented for comparison purposes with those to be obtained from
. the other type tests.
1 3 . c. Service Ccndition Simulation and Acine Tests a . 1
- 1) The timing relay was subjected to the accelerated operational cycling to bring it to its end-of-life
. usage of 10 years. An oscillater was installed to . -"---- control the applying and remcving of voltage supply j to the test item. The timing on the oscillator and '
i . relay were set such that before de-energizing the relay, the delay would elapse.
. *This cycling was performed 7,400 times which represents
]j the 10 year life usage. f . 2) For the second phase of this type test, the relay 1 was thermally aged, that is, for a duration of 100
! days inside a test chamber, the temperature was 2 maintained at 160*F and the relative humidity at 5 0 % R.9. Pressure was atmosphericthroughout the duration.

3 2 CPS) and then the fixture was attached to the exciter shake table. The fixtura was designed to transmit the vibratory inputs without any degradation 'co seismic requirements as well as maintaining the test I
item in its correct attitude. - 3 2) Testing done censisted of subjecting the test fi:cture to vibratisn inputs in one axis, as well as twe axes simultanocusly and independently so that a purely rectilinear motion did not result. Durine the two 7- , axes simultanecus vibration, testing was dcne en the ([ . ' () ,

The rate of change of fre-quency (frc= 1 HZ to 40 HZ) was approximately one (1) . octave per minute or that frequency change necessary to acquire suitable response. The input level was 0.2g peak or 1 inch D.A., whichever is . greater. Only cne axis at a time had vibration applied. -
I 4) The seismic qualification was performed using a complex randc= motica. Testing was done in two steps with the test =cdule's principal heri ental 1 , axis first positioned parallel with the test table J motion , then rctated 90* in the horicontal plane i , for the second step. .

- 6) During the seismic qualificatica the test =cdule was energi:ed and its perfor=ance was reccrded and docu-mented as per paragraph 2b3 through 2b6. perfor=ance data was then ce= pared with these that were previcusly
., obtained.
- f. Sinulated post Accidenu Cenditions Tests
- 'l) This pertien of the stress program was perfer ed in a
an envireng. ental controlled test cha=ber. Since the
- j test =cdule was censidered to be inside the secondary chanber, it was subjected to both LOCA I and II
. conditions. , , 2) For the first 30 days the test =cdule was subjected to elevated tencerature and relative humidity of 122*F and 90% RS, respectively. This was censidered j ~
the LOCA I cenditien. I ' 1'

- 3) For the next 200 days, the temperature and relative humidity were further elevated to 150 *? and 95 % RH respectively. This cendition represented the LOCA II 2nrameters.

- 4) The test module was then functionally tested after sCN 7 the exposure using the procedure discussed in ([
(v)) . paragraphs 2b2 through 2b6 on page 95. 5). All the results were documented and then ecmpared to those obtained during the initial functional tests.
- 3. Results and Cenclusien The test module, after being subjected to the different type tests of the stress program, remained fully functional. Based on this, the Agastat 7012AD can therefore be classified as
, Class 1E Equipment for Nuclear Pcwer Plants having identical or less severo operational conditions.
The following st==arizes the conditiens/ parameters to which the Agastat relay was exposed and qualified as a Class 12 equipment: Life Simulation: 7,400 cycles of activating and then de-acuavarang :ne relay coil. Time delay set at 10% of the rating. High Temperature Acine: Long term exposure with a total dur-ation of 100 cays maintaining the temperature and relative bc=idity at 16 0
- F and 5 0 % RE , respectively. Pressure at i . atmospheric value. This expcsure and the above cycling (-
i (sj v represent the device's equivalent 10 year service life. - Nuclear Radiaticn: 1 X 107 rads, total cummu'ative dose of I gamma racia :ca produced by Co-60 source pencils. Seismic vibratien: Prem frequencies between 1 and 40 E:, 1
- input acceleransen up to 12 g's without affecting the device's - - ~
structural integrity. No chattering of the relay's contacts obtained.
