Dear Mr. Musolf:

DCDi IannI

SUBJECT:

RELIEF REQUESTS FROM INSERVICE INSPECTION (ISI) REQUIREMENTS -

PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT UNIT 2 RELIEF REQUEST NOS. 29 AND 66 By letter dated August 9, 1925 you requested relief from requirements of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, concerned with the hydrostatic pressure testing of a pipe section in the charging system and the surface examination of a valve pressure boundary at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Unit No. 2. The proposed relief request, appearing as Relief Request Nos. 29 and 66 in your inservice inspection program, is related to applying the design pressure during the hydrostatic pressure test of a section of pipe in the charging system and the visual examination of the internal pressure boundary surface of a 10-inch gate valve.

Pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(6)(1) the Commission recognizes that the requirements of the ASME Section XI Code may be impractical to implement at facilities because of limitations of design, geometry and material of construction of components and systems. We have reviewed your submittal and determined that the code requirements for the examination of the com-ponents described above are impractical. We conclude that the proposed reliefs will not endanger life or property or the common defense and security and it is otherwise in the public interest giving due consideration to the burden upon the licensee that could result if the requirements were imposed upon the facility.

A copy of our related Safety Evaluation is enclosed.

Sincerely, Odihd Sped 4 8510240589 851011 LER.km
