March 29, 1985 letter from M. O. Medford (SCE) to J. B. Martin (NRC) regarding the subject topic Reference 1 provided SCE's initial response to the subject IE Bulletin. The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the relay replacement status for San Onofre Units 1, 2 and 3.
As stated in Refe'unce 1, thirty-one of the specified General Electric Type HFA relays were fo'ad in use at San Onofre Unit 1.
Replacement of twenty-nine (29) of these rehys has been completed. The remaining two (2) relays will be replaced before return to service from the current refueling outage.
Prior to replacement, the monthly visual surveillance program established as part of the initial IE Bulletin response will be maintained to assure continued operability of the affected relays.
In Reference 2 SCE committed to replace twelve (12) 1E HFA series 51/54 relays in use in San Onofre Units 2 and 3 with Century Series relays before March 12, 1986.
Eleven (11) of these twelve (12) HFA relays have been replaced to date.
Replacement of the remaining HFA relay in the Unit 2 Auxiliary Building Emergency Chiller will be completed during the current 8603250178 860317 gDR ADOCK 05000206 PDR 1
