Dear Mayor Knox:

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). as part of its responsibility of regulating nuclear power plants. periodically evaluates the performance of its licensees through a program called the Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP). Through this program, we review and evaluate our licensees' performance in the four major categories of: Plant Operations.

Maintenance. Engineering, and Plant Support. The Plant Support category includes an assessment of licensee performance with regard to emergency  ;

preparedness.

On May 7, 1997. representatives of the NRC will meet with the management of l the Duke Power Company to discuss the McGuire Nuclear Power Plant's performance over the past 19 months. You are invited to attend this meeting  :

as an observer.

Subsequent to this meeting, we have scheduled time to meet with you, and other members of your staff as you deem appropriate, to discuss matters of mutual 1 interest with regard to the regulation and performance of McGuire.  !

This SALP meeting is scheduled to be conducted at 10:00 a.m. at the Administration Building. Room 155, at the site. The proposed meeting with you l and other local and State officials will be conducted in the Energy Explorium j Auditorium, shortly after the conclusion of the SALP.
