Letter from W. G. Counsil to B. J. Youngblood; Request for Acceptance of a New Code Case and a Revised Code Case dated June 8, 1984 The NRC staff has completed its review of your request for authorization to use ASME Code Case N-249-4 to permit the use of AISI 4330V modified

low alloy steel as ASTM A-668, Class M at Millstone Nuclear Power Station Unit No. 3, as discussed in Item 1 of the Reference Letter B11216.

Code Case N-249-4, " Additional Material for Subsection NF, Classes 1, 2 and 3 Component Supports Fabricated Without Welding Section III, Division 1" is an acceptable Code Case which is approved as written with no additional requirements other than those specified in the Code Case. The Code Case is expected to be endorsed by the NRC in a future revision of Regulatory Guide 1.85, " Materials Code Case Acceptability ASME Section III, Division 1."

Code Case N-249-4 may, therefore, be used at the Millstone Nuclear Power Station Unit No. 3 within the limitations stated in the " Inquiry" and " Reply" section of the Code Case. Use of the Code Case should be documented in a future Amendment to the FSAR.
