Subject:
Final 10CFR50.55(e) Report; Westinghouse EMD Cate Valve Position Indication - Unit 1 Corrective Action Complete (CDR 83-00-01)
Dear Sir:
In Reference (b), we filed a 10CFR50.55(e) report regarding a deficiency with certain Westinghouse manufactured gate valves. This deficiency was previously evaluated and determined to be reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).
Description of Deficiency The potential exists for certain Westinghouse manufactured gate valves to provide indication that they are closed prior to the valve disc fully isolating flow.
This is possible because the Westinghouse generic wiring specifications incorporate a motor-operated valve limit switch setting which may provide an erroneous indication that the valve is fully closed, when in l
actuality, it may be slightly open.
Safety Implications s
As a result of the erroneous valve position indication, an intersystem leakage path may go undetected.

United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention:
Mr. Richard W. Starostecki Page 2 Corrective Action Westinghouse has provided a recommended modification to the generic wiring specifications. The change provides a new procedure for setting and connecting the limit switch to ensure that upon receipt of a closure indication, the flow path has been isolated.
A design change was initiated to implement the corrective action as recommended by Westinghouse. With the above corrective action having been verified completed for Unit 1, this is considered our final report on this item for Unit 1.
The corrective action for the applicable Unit 2 Westinghouse manufactured valves has not yet been completed and is being tracked by a Field Change Notice (FCN). We will inform Region I when the corrective action for the Unit 2 equipment has been completed.
Very truly yours, vb p
