DUKE POWER COMPANY McGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION SAFETY REVIEW GROUP SPECIAL REPORT This Special Report is being submitted as required by Selected Licensee Conunitment (SLC) 16.7-2, Seismic Instrumentation. If one or more seismic monitoring instruments are inoperable for more than 30 days, SLC 16.7-2 requires McGuire to prepare and submit a Special Report to the Cornmission pursuant to Technical Specification 6.9.2 within the next 10 days outlining the cause of the malfunction and the plans for restoring the instrument (s) to operable status. One of three Peak Accelerometers was removed from service on February
1997, as documented on Problem Investigation Report (PIP) 0-M97-0923 and Wor.. Order 95092624.

April 7,1997 Description ofIncident Unit Status: Unit I wts in No Mode (Defueled) and Unit 2 in Mode 1 at 100% power at the time the Peak Acceleiometer was removed from service.
The Peak Ru ording Accelerometer is a Teledyne Geotech Model PRA-103 device. It will detect and record peak amplitudes at low frequency accelerations resulting from canhquakes.
Peak Accelerometer, IMIMT-5030, was removed on Febmary 26,1997 under WO 95092624 as part of the Steam Generator Replacement Project. The Accelerometer is located on Auxiliary Feedwater System piping connected to the 'D' Steam Generator.
The Accelerometer will be placed back into service prior to Unit I start-up.
