Mr. Ashok C. Thadani PWR Project Directorate #8 Division of PWR Licensing-B

SUBJECT:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit Nos.1 & 2; Docket Nos. 50-317 & 50-318 Inservice inspection Program Pump and Valve Testing Request for Relief from ASME Code Section XI Requirements Determined to be Irnpractical

REFERENCE:

(a)

BG&E Letter from Mr. A. E. Lundvall, Jr., to Mr. E. 3. Butcher, dated September 13,1985 Gentlemen:

This letter provides supplemental information in regard to a request for exemption from ASME Code Section XI requirements forwarded in Reference (a).

With regard to item A of Reference (a), " Measurement of pump flow rate (Unit 2 only),"

we will install the flow instrumentation necessary for Calvert Cliffs Unit 2 to rneet the requirements of ASME Code Section XI,1977 Edition with Summer 1978 Addenda, Article IWP-3100. This instrumentation will be installed prior to the end of the next Unit 2 refueling outage, currently scheduled for spring 1987. Flow instrumentation will be installed for pumps in the following systems:

High Pressure Safety injection Saltwater Low Pressure Safety injection Service Water Containment Spray Component Cooling Auxiliary Feedwater We will seek instrumentation that will meet the accuracy requirements of Table IWP-4110-1; however, if such instrumentation is not available, we will request relief from the requirements of IWP-4110-1 in order to use commercially available instrumentation.

Mr. Ashok C. Thadani 3anuary 13,1986 Page 2 For the pumps in the Service Water, Saltwater, and Component Cooling Systems, it is not possible to establish fixed reference values of flow which are readily duplicated during operation as required by IWP-3110, as flow rates in these systems vary with operating conditions and seasonal changes in cooling water supply temperatures. For these pumps, reference curves may be generated so that pump performance may be evaluated.

Flow instrumentation is not required on Unit I at present as the pumps are tested in accordance with the 1974 version of the ASME Code as fixed resistance systems.

With regard to Item B of Reference (a), " Duration of Tests (Unit 1 & 2)," we will amend our pump testing program upon installation of flow instrumentation such that the duration of pump tests meet the requirements of IWP-3500.

With regard to item C of Reference (a), " Pump Bearings (Unit 1 & 2)," there is no change in the relief request.

Very truly yours, M. E. Bowman General Supervisor -
