Naval Reactors, under its Department of Energy authority, issues certificates of compliance required for radioactive material

shipping containers used within the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.

In support of issuing these certificates, Naval i

Reactors obtains Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) review of safety analysis reports for packaging.

In a NRC letter dated February 24, 1997, the NRC asked whether j

Naval Reactors intended to renew the certificate of compliance for the WAPD-40 shipping cask'.

The NRC docket number for this certificate is 71-5874.

The NRC letter noted that the certificate of compliance expires on July 31, 1997.

Naval Reactors has no future use for the WAPD-40 and requests that the NRC WAPD-40 shipping cask certificate of compliance be canceled.

The NRC has also issued a certificate of compliance for the Disposable Concrete Vault / Steel Overpack Waste Package.

The NRC docket number for this certificate is 71-6142.

This certificate l

expires on December 31, 1997.

This package will be retired from Type B container service at the end of 1997.

Therefore, Naval Reactors confirms the commitment made to the NRC in letter S#92-12077 dated December 18, 1992 and requests that the NRC certificate of compliance for this package be canceled effective January 1, 1998.
