REQUEST FR0!1 COM:11SS10NER AHEARNE REGARDING ACRS COMMENTS ON EFFORTS All1ED AT REDUCING THE FUEL ENRICHMENT OF U.S.
RESEARCH REACTORS The attached memo from Connissioner Ahearne requests ACRS views on the steps which might be taken to induce the owners of U.S. research reactors to re-duce the enrichment of their reactor fuel.
I understand from discussions with Connissioner Ahearne's staff that he would like a preliminary reaction by the first of May,1983.
It appears to me that the best way to proceed regarding this matter is to ask an ad hoc group consisting of members with some knowledge in thu area (e.g., Kerr, liark, Lewis) to provide a report for consideration by the full
( Conaittee during the April nceting so that it could be forwarded to Commis-stoner Ahearne as a Working Group Report rather than a Connittee report in response to his request. Even at that, I'm not sture we can make the liay I deadline.
I will be in touch with you regarding this matter after I have had a chance to talk to those members with existing knowledge / interest regarding this subje ct.
