Dockot No. 50-352 Attachment to Monthly Operating Report for October, 1985 Limerick Generating Station Unit 1 October 1 through October 31, 1985 I. Narrative Summary of Operating Experiences The unit began the month at approximately 48% power.

On October 8, while clearing a block on the "A" Standby Liquid Control (SBLC) pump, an unexpected pump start occurred injecting sodium pentaborate solution into the reactor pressure vessel ( RPV) . The SBLC system was shutdown af ter an assessment of plant conditions confirmed that the boron injection was not required. The reactor water conductivity increased to approximately 6.5 micromhos/cm as a result of the sodium pentaborate injection. After the SBLC injection, a planned turbine trip test was performed successfully resulting in the expected reactor scram. The unit was placed in the cold shutdown condition, thereby satisfying the reactor water chemistry requirements of the Technical Specifications.

The cause of the SBLC injection has been traced to a design deficiency (relay race) in the pump's start logic. A permanent resolution is under review by the Engineering &

Research Department.

On October 14, the reactor was restarted. The next day, the unit scrammed from 2% power on reactor low water level.

The reactor water level dropped due to reactor pressure increasing beyond the capability of the condensate pumps prior to reactor feedpumps being placed in service. The reactor was restarted and the turbine-generator was synchronized the same day.

On October 31, load was reduced from 68% to 34% due to a recirculation runback caused by a loss of the total feedwater flow input to the runback circuitry. The loose connection on the 24 Volt DC power supply, that caused disruption to instrumentation in the power chamber, was l reconnected and the unit returned to power escalation.

)

The unit ended the report period in start-up testing at  !

approximately 68% power.
