g This letter will confirm a telephone conversation by Mr. T. B. Bowie with Mr. R. Jackson of your staff on October 16, 1985.

Combustion Engineering, Inc., initiated an inventory of Special Nuclear Material on September 17, 1985 and reconciled it on October 16, 1985. The results indicated that our BPID could exceed the limit of error for both element and isotope in addition to the 9 Kg U235 requirement of 10CFR70.53(e)

(5)(1). The BPID would not exceed the 0.5% requirement of 10CFR70.53(e)

(5)(ii). Discussions were held to describe the various avenues to follow in resolving these differences.

To provide for additional time to resolve these differences, it was requested that consideration be given to the granting of an extension until October 30, 1985 to reconcile the inventory and submit the DOE /NRC Fonn 742 - Material Balance Report.

Your consideration to this request is most appreciated. Your office will be advised as to the outcome of this investigation.
