Dear Mr. Davis:

Re:

Nine Mile Point Unit 2 Docket 70-2948 This letter transmits additional information supporting the 10CFR70.24 exemption request filed with your office on October 22, 1985. This information was requested by Mr. N. Ketzlach of your staff in a telephone call to Niagara Mohawk Licensing personnel.

Nine Mile Point Unit 2 nuclear fuel is standard BWR 8 x 8 geometry bundled fuel rods handled and stored as discrete arrays. The maximum enrichment of the initial fuel bundles is 2.191 w/o U-235. The unirradiated fuel bundles will be handled and stored in an air environment. The storage of the fuel will be in the NRC certified General Electric Company shipping containers until it is transferred to the engineered controlled spacing new or spent fuel storage racks in the new fuel storage vault or spent fuel pool. The storage vault and spent fuel pool combine engineered safety features and administrative controls to mitigate the consequences of an accidental flooding of the stored fuel assemblies by water or other moderators.

Details of the reactor fuel to be handled and stored at Nine Mile Point Unit 2 are contained in Section -1.1 and Table 1 of Special Nuclear Material License Application No. 1895 docketed on June 12, 1985 and amended on September 27, 1985. The handling and storage conditions for the fuel are described in Section 1.2_of the Special Nuclear Material application and Nuclear Reactor Regulation approved Nine Mile Point Unit 2 FSAR Section 9.1 submitted with the original Special Nuclear Material license application.
