diochbaum9ucsusa.org Steven Dwyer, sud@wdc. net PAUL, the SONGS Unit 1 spent fuel pool was designed and built in the mid 1960's using commercial grade standards and materials no j

better and maybe inferior to that used in the original construction of the Local Public Document Room (LPDR) at the University of California at Irvine (UCI). The difference is that taxpayer money can be used to upgrade the LPDR at UCI where as a upgrade to the. Unit i spent fuel pool would come out of Southern California Edison's (SCE) pocket book for a plant that will never produce another dollar for SCE. Note that UCI is a new campus having been. founded at about the same time or after construction began at SONGS Unit 1. After some of our recent earthquakes, the state government agreed that state buildings and freeways needed upgrading. SCE decided to use their political power, and legal, technical and PR resources to blow the problem pass the public.

Once again the NRC (Nobody Really Cares) looked the other way. Once their nuclear plants are permanently shutdown,. other utilities will behave like SONGS Unit 1 and ignore'their spent fuel pool problems. The monetary motivation to be responsible will be gone.- glen From:
