Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Feedwater Line Cracking Your letter of May 25, 1979, requested informtion regarding PWR Feedwater lines. Met-Ed letters of June 26, 1979, (GQL 0807) and July 13, 1979, (GQL 0883) provided portions of the requested information.

Attached please find the remainder of the requested information. Additionally, a revised Table III of our letter of June 26, 1979, (GQL 0807) is attached.

Pleasa note that we have attached supplemental information pe.taining to the auxiliary feedwater system.

Provide as-built piping or isometric drawings of the feedwater line to steam generator sparger within the containment.

Show details of the design such as dimensions, pipe schedule, support type and locations, pipe restraints and valve (s).

The information requested above is provided for Babcock & Wilcox manufactured or supplied main and auxiliary feedwater components by the following drawings.

The drawings are found in the OTSG Instruction Manual for Metropolitan Edison Company, TMI-//1, Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Pennsylvaina, June 1975 Edition.

Provide the results of any stress or fatigue analyses which was performed for this system.

Response

A summary of results of the stress and fatigue analyses performed on the two OTSG main and auxiliary feedwater system components supplied by Babcock & Wilcox are shown in attachments I and II, respectively. These results were summarized from the Metropolitan Edison co., OTSG Stress Report for TMI #1, (i.e. Nss-5),

which has previously been issued to the customer.

The analyses consider a miximum or worst case set of conditions and are applicable for both generators.

The nozzle design code and the header and riser design code for the main and aux, feedwater systems are also provided by attachments I and II.

TMI-I - NSS 005 NRC Requests:

O Provide the details of the welding process (es) used to make the nozzle-to-pipe, pipe to sparger and piping welds.

Include details of welding such as preheat, joint configuration (include with or without backing ring), and post weld treatment, if any.

8 Provide the NDE performed during and after fabrication of the weld joints requested in question 2.

Response

For the individual welds performed prior to component shipment the details of joint configuration, the welding processes used and the NDE performed during and af ter fabrication of the weld are shown in attachments A thru E respectively.

Each attach-ment contains welding process and NDE information for the assembly circled in the left column.

is for the main feedwater headers).

The lead sheet of each attach-ment is a summary of the information contained in the attach-ment.

Note that the welding of the feedwater header connection to ris@r, the elbow to feedwater nozzle, the feedwater nozzle r

to OTSG (seal Weld), and the feedwater piping to header welds are erection assembly weldments.

Also, the auxiliary feedwater flange to elbow, riser to flange, flange to header, and auxiliary feedwater piping to header are erection assembly weldments.

For these joints, the customer can obtain the requested information from his site construction records.
