$25 Ouestion 1.
What effect will the Three liile Island incident have on M
%g nuclear plants presently under construction, in particular the one at Limerick?
~
~~
Answer It is apparent that the Three Mile Island incident will affect
=ces W
all U.S. power reactors to some degree, but it would be pure m
speculation at this time to try to define just what the effect Nd would be on any specific reactor.
The two reactors at Limerick 5
y are, however, significantly different from the two at Three Ae Mile Island, and it would be reasonable to believe that the Si-
,a.
@d direct effect would be relatively small.

Dear Congressman Gudger:
I am pleased to respond to your letter dated April 2,1979 regarding the status of the Ocenee Nuclear Station operated by Duke Power Company.
.i.
The three units at the Oconee Nuclear Station are pressurized wate'r iesctors and each unit utilines a nuclear steam supply system designed by Babcoc*
M r
and Wilcox.
The nuclear stean supply syste=s for oconee are substantially 3
identical to the Three Mile Island facility.
Significant differences in W
facility design between Oconee and Three Mile Island do exist in the M
en.ergency power supply syste.=s and the auxiliary feedvater systecs. The M
Oconee units utilize autonitically dispatched hydro units for their
$re e rgency power supply while the Three Mile Island units utiline autecatic a
starting diesel generators.
The hydro units utilized at Oconee have per-ferned satisfactorily as an emergency power source and there are no i:::ediate 65 plans to require 'a change to diesel generators as a source of e=ergency power.
The auxiliary feedvater syste=s at the Oconee units are in the W
process of being upgraded to provide a nuch higher degree of reliability.
Interi= actions have been taken to insu.re that the health and safety of th M
public are not adversely af fected by continued operation of Oconee Units 1 M
and 2 until such time as the modifications to the aucilian feedvater systens are co:pleted.
(Oconee Unit 3 is currently shut down for refueling.)
W The upgrading of the auxiliary feedwater syste=s includes the installation E
N@
of two noter driven feedvater pumps for each unit in addition to the cur-rently installed sten = driven pu=p.
Additional inforr.ation concerning.
changes in operating procedures and plant syste=s at Oconee Nuclear S.a ion is ou,tlined in Enclosures 1 and 2.
4.24 There bas been no investigation of alleged release of' vaste vat'er ce:taine,g radioactive caterials in the past year.
There was a liquid release at Ocence in January 1977, which resulted in the i= position of a civil penalty y
it the apount of sixteen thousand dollars ($16,000).
A.. s"-a ry of the release and the subsequent inspection activities is provided in Enclosure 3.
