OPERATIONS

SUMMARY

i The Fort Calhoun Station started its ninth outage attaining refueling shutdown mode on October 1, 1985. The following jobs are in progress:

4 refueling operations are about 35% complete, CE has eddy current tested (ECT) 42 of 64 part length poison rods: the steam generator tube ECT work is 95% complete; installation of nozzle dams has allowed perfor-i mance of ECT while the cavity is flooded for fuel handling; polar crane feed rails are 80% back in place (the original feed. rails had to be l

rebuilt when the new rails were manufactured with the wrong curvature);

j HFA relay replacement is 45% complete with 90 of 233 relays installed and tested; SBM switch replacement is 65% complete with 14 of 31 installed and tested; penetration subassemblies are 75% complete with 20 of 77 installed and tested; battery charger and inverter replacement is just getting started; the main generator field heater replacement is 60% complete with one small and one duplex heater left to install; and earlier in the month the containment integrated leak rate test (ILRT)

)

was perfo med.

One Auxiliary Operator-Nuclear was hired in October.

The following training classes have been in progress during October; SR0 upgrade with four candidates; Equipment Operator-Nuclear (Turbine) with seven students was completed; the second Auxiliary Operator-Nuclear l

class was completed and the third class with three students has started; operator requalification; C/RP ter.hnician; emergency plan; j

and general employee training.

No safety valve or PORY challenges or failures occurred.

CHANGES, TESTS AND EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT WITHOUT COMMISSION APPROVAL Procedure Description SP-RP-1 Refueling Shutdown Initial Radiological Survey Procedure.

This procedure did not constitute an unreviewed safety question as defined by 10CFR50.59 since performance of radiation surveys has no effect on plant equipment or safety systems.

S P-CHEM-3 Containment Atmosphere Sampling During Containment Pressure Test - ST-CONT-7.

This procedure did not constitute an unreviewed safety question as defined by 10CFR50.59 since sampling of containment air for preparation of a containment pressure reduction permit affects no safety systems and is in full compliance with the requirements and intent of 10CFR20 and 10CFR50, Appendix J.

System Acceptance Committee Packages for October,1985:

Package Description / Analysis EEAR FC-81-05 Chemical Lagoon Banks and Rock Work.

This modification provided foundation work for the new chemical lagoon.

This modification does not have an adverse effect on the safety analysi.

EEAR FC-83-62 Roofing Repair on Technical Support Center.

This modification repaired the roof leakage in the Technical Support Center.

This modification does not have an adverse effect on the safety analysis.

EEAR FC-83-66 Allenaire Air Cylinders for FH-1.

This modification installed new air-over-water Allenaire cylinders for FH-1 camera tilt and spreader, return spring on spreader and new indication on extended light.

This modification does not have an adverse effect or the safety analysis.

This modification replaced LCV-1198 with a Camflex II control valve.

This modification does not have an adverse effect on the safety analysis.

DCR 77-21 Waste Evaporator Demineralized Water and Nitrogen Gas Valves.

This modification installed remote operated control valves on the evaporator for nitrogen gas purge line and the demineralized water flush line.

This modification does not have an adverse effect on the safety analysis.

EEAR FC-85-123 Environmental Air Samplers.

This modification provided for the installation of additional environmental air samplers for monitoring plant effluents (i.e., particulates and iodines) during normal and accident operations.

This modification does not have an adverse effect on the safety analysis.

E.

RESULTS OF LEAK RATE TESTS Refueling leak testing is in progress.

Total leakage will be reported after testing is completed.

F.

CHANGES IN PLANT OPERATING STAFF During October, Dennis Hanson began his employment as an Auxiliary Operator-Nuclear.

I Monthly Operations Report October, 1985 Page Four G.

TRAINING During October, training was completed in the following areas:

turbine building operator, new emergency operating procedures for licensed operators and auxiliary operator training. An Instrumentation and Control Instructor was added to the Station Training Department staff. SR0 upgrade training continued.
