Dear Mr. Fay:

SUBJECT:

GENERIC LETTER 85-12, IMPLEMENTATION OF TMI ACTION PLAN ITEM II.K.3-5, " AUTOMATIC TRIP 0F REACTOR COOLANT PUMPS" We have received your August 16, 1985 response to the subject generic letter.

In your response you indicate that infonnation requested in the generic letter relating to instrumentation uncertainties, potential reactor coolant pump problems, operator training and procedures will be submitted by January 31, 1986. You also indicated that you have already selected and implemented (July 1,1985 Emergency Operating Procedures) appropriate reactor coolant pump (RCP) trip criteria to address plant specific concerns identified in our Safety Evaluation enclosed with Generic Letter 85-12.

As discussed with Mr. Krause of your staff, we believe that a response date earlier than January 31, 1986 for providing the information requested in the generic letter would be more appropriate.

Accordingly, I am requesting that you reexamine your submittal schedule for possible improvement, including the feasibility of a " piecemeal" response to the additional information request.

Our goal in this regard is to obtain as much of the information as possible on the docket within 90 days of your receipt of Generic Letter 85-12 and the balance within 150 days of receipt.

If you have any questions, please contact your NRC project manager, T. G. Colburn, at (301) 492-4709.

This request for information was approved by the Office of Management and Budget under clearance number 3150-0065 which expires September 30, 1985. Coments on burden and duplication may be directed to the Office of Management and Budget.
