PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT Docket Nos. 50-282 License Nos. DPR-42 50-306 DPR-60 Reauest for Acoroval of Alternative to ASME Code Reauirements On January 19,1996 we submitted a request for approval of an alternative to ASME Code requirements. In that request, we sought an alternative to the NDE requirements for weld repairs to canopy seal welds at full length control rod drive mechanisms (CRDMs). The request covered locations H8, F6, F8, H6, and G7 on Unit 1; it also covered locations F6 and G7 on Unit 2.
The NRC responded with a letter and attached SER, each dated March 6,1996. The conclusion found the proposed alternative acceptable. However, the letter and SER did not list all of the locations requested and restricted the acceptance to those that were being repaired at the time (although listing two locations as acceptable that were not to be repaired until later). We understand that it was intended to approve the request for all of the requested locations. We therefore request that it be clarified that the acceptance of the alternative applies to all seven of the requested locations.
We have made no new Nuclear Regulatory Commission commitments in this letter.
