1. INTRODUCTION Environmental radioactivity levels on the North Carolina State University campus have been observed to remain at very low icvels during this reporting period.

Technical problems with counting instrumentation have resulted in the absence of alpha and beta ac:ivities for air, milk, and surface water sampics during the months of December 1984, January, February, and March 1985. Soil and vegetation sampics taken in January 1985 were processed and counted in April 1985.

2. AIR MONITORING (Tables 2.2 and 2.3)

Tables 2.2 and 2.3 give the gross beta activities and gamma activities of selected nuclides in units of fCi m' . Cross beta activities are determined by counting millinore air filters which are collected on a weekly basis. The beta data given in Table 2.2 for each monitor station is a mean value obtained f rom four samples. The gamma activities are reported as the composite of five Ili-Vol glass fiber filters representing each of the monitoring stations on campua. They are also reported as mean values based on four weeks of counting.

3. MILK (Tables 3.1 and 3.2)

Monthly analyses of milk from the Campus Creamery have consistently shown concentrations of Sr-90 that are well below the FDA's Preventive Protective

~l Action Guide value of 0.009 microcuries liter for infants. Table 3.2 nhows that the I-131 1cyc1 is below this laboratory's detection limit of 2.0 pico-

~

curies liter . The FDA'n Preventive PAC value for I-131 in milk is 0.015

~1 microcurien liter for infants.

4. SURFACE WATER (Tablen 4.1 and 4.2)

The groan alpha and gronn beta activities are given with the ganna emitters K-40 and Cs-137. Those nampics were collected on Rocky Branch Creek at locations relative to the campus designated an ON and 0FF.

5. SOIL (Table 5.1)

Soil raamplen were collected at four campun locationn (North, South, East, and Went of the reactor) and also at the Old Burial Ground on Reedy Crock Road and at the New Burial Ground near Carter Stadium. Mont samplen were taken within four inchon of the surf ace, but a few sampion (two feet) woro obtained outnido tho two burial nites. All namplen indicated low levoin of radioactivity.

6. VECETATION (Table 6.1)

Samples of grass were taken at the same locations as the soil samples.

Analysis for gross alpha, gross beta, and specific nuclides revealed no significant levels of radioactivity.
