Dear Dr. Jackson,
I am a geologist in Southem Califomia, and I am deeply concemed by the current situation at San Onofre NPP. The design criteria for this old plant was 0.75 G's acceleration. With the new information gathered at the Landers and Northridge Quakes, this criteria is fatally flawed. The
'l accelerations recorded at Northridge exceeded 1.8 G's ill and it was only a i
Richter 7+ quake. Horizontal offsets of up to 20 feet in the Landers quake were also way J
2 beyond geologists and seismologists estimates. The whole science in is disarray. Also the j
Northridge fault was a " Blind Thrust" and not mapped or assessed. If we have a larger quake

here on the San Andreas, or a smaller one closer to the plant, well I hate to imagine...
What's even worse is the fact that scientists are not able to give us the info we need to

evaluate the situation.
Many engineers were outraged that I would even bring up this miscalculation. There is a l
conspiracy of silence that is deafning. Please shut down the plant asap pending a complete review of this new seismic risk. This old plant isn't worth saving anyway. We now consider it j.
the greatest such risk in the worid today. A Chemobyl at the beach, while the rest of S. CA crawls out from the rubble will be more than this civilazation could survive. Please do something!
