SUBJECT:
PROPOSED EXPORT OF DEUTERIUM OXIDE TO CANADA (XMAT0322)
On August 14, 1985, Lasermetrics, Inc., applied for a license to export 500 pounds of heavy water (deuterium oxide) to the Atomic Energy of Canada, Limited in Canada for purification purposes only and return to Lasermetrics for use in crystal growing at its facility.
The applicant has requested NRC to expedite the processing of the license request as the material is ready for immediate shipment, and the company was unaware that an export license was required before export.
The staff has concluded that the proposed export meets the requirements of the Atomic Er.ergy Act, as amended, and would not be inimical to the common defense and security of the United States.
I In view of the above considerations, the staff issued the license without the normal 15-day waiting period.
