Gentlemen:
Subject: Inspection No. 50-193/85-02
A routine, announced safety inspection was conducted on June 11-12, 1985, of
the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center. Areas reviewed included radiological
controls, effluent monitoring, and transportation activities.
The inspection indicated that one activity was in apparent violation of NRC
requirements. Details are provided in enclosure Appendix A. You are required
to respond to this finding by following the instructions included in Appendix A.
A concern was raised regarding the operability of the reactor building clean
up system filter bank, and the lack of in place filter testing for particulates
since 1971. In a telephone conversation on June 24, 1985, between Dr. Shanbaky
of my staff and Mr. Doyle of your staff, a commitment was made to perform
in place filter testing of this system in the near future. This item will
remain unresolved pending our review of the results of this test.
