Attendance at this course is available to the Agreement States on a space available basis.

Description:==

The course provides a~ basic understan' ding of clinical radiation therapy procedures and dosimetry' involving primarily cobalt-60steletherapy (external irradiation) and various brachytherapy (implanted radionuclide) sources.

Topics covered include facilities and equipment; safe handling of. patients with implanted-brachytherapy sources; inventories; and area radiation surveys.

Responsibilities and authority of. key personnel, Radiation Safety Committee, ALARA program, transport of radioactive materials, misadministrations, requireme'nts for recordkeeping, quality assurance, teletherapy room design and shielding, i

teletherapy spot checks, calibrations, and source i

replacements are also discussed.

Opportunities are provided for har.ds-on experience. Relevant portions of 10 CFR Part 35, " Medical Use of Byproduct Material" and NRC Regulatory 4

Guide 10.8, " Guide for the Preparation of Applications for Medical Use Programs" are emphasized.

Written comprehensive final examination.

Prerequisites:

A knowledge of basic radiation protection is necessary. A hand-held calculator with exponential and logarithmic functions is recommended.
