On July 1,1985, you provided us with clarifying information regarding item 1 of our Confirmatory Action Letter issued on June 10, 1985. The purpose of this letter is to clarify the exact nature of steps that need to be taken before corrective actions are initiated for hardware problems which were identified.
With respect to the specific steps outlined in your letter, we understand that you will; a) provide to the NRC Resident Inspectors your plans to investigate each failure prior to the start of troubleshooting activities; b) upon completion of the investigation of any particular activity, submit your determination of the root cause of the malfunction and failure to the Office of NRR with a copy to Region III. You should also submit general corrective actions that you plan to take to address the root causes.
Initiation of work on the corrective actions is not dependent upon NRC approval; and c) the Region III Resident Inspectors' office should be notified of the plans and schedules for carrying out the corrective action work prior to the work being performed.
