Q AMENDMENT RE00EST FOR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FACILITY:

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Open Pool-Reactor LICENSE:

R61 DOCKET NUMBER:

50-134 Please amend our Technical Specifications to conform with revised page 7, enclosed, dated 7/25/84.

Safety Analysis:

a) Our Technical Specifications, as originally submitted with our license renewal request, specified an upper detection Ifmit for our emergency beta-gamma survey instruments to be at least 50 R/hr. The current version incorrectly specifies 50 mR/hr. We have restored 50 R/hr.

b) Since the instruments described in thi.s section are used by the operator to evaluate potentially hazardous levels of radiation, it is desirable to use a single detector with logarithmic scales and/or

{ ',

a range selector switch. Our selection of scales is based on our desire to have the highest range possible while still retaining good low level sensitivity.

For daily use in checking experiments etc, as well as for possible use in an accident situation, we have specified a minimum scale designation of 1 mR/hr and a maximum of over 50 R/hr. For our emergency instrument, which is kept outside the facility, and which is used only to evaluate a possible accident, we specify 10 mR/hr to over 50 R/hr.

These standards are entirely adequate for their intended purposes and instruments meeting these standards are readily available commercially.

Our lower range instruments used in conjunction with by-product material license compliance are not intended to be covered in our Reactor Facility License specifications.
