YDEMtN.i50-4161 a Mr. Jackson B. Richard Senior Vice President, Nuclear Mississippi Power and Light Company P.O. Box 23054 Jackson, Mississippi 39205

Dear Mr. Richard:

Subject:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 - Safety Relief Valve Inplant Tests By letter dated June 6,1985, the Mississippi Power and Light Company requested approval of a change in the safety relief valve (SRV) inplant test program which would allow termination of the test program with the tests already completed.

The previously-approved test program consists of a shakedown test, four single valve actuation (SVA) tests and four multiple valve actuation (MVA) tests.

Tests completed include a shakedown test, three SVA tests and the one MVA test.

In addition, three consecutive valve actuation (CVA) tests were run, although not required by the test program. The CVA tests were run to provide infomation on the most limiting SRV loading on the containment structure. By letters dated June 18 and July 3,1985, licensee provided test results and other information to support its conclusion that test results already obtained are sufficient to meet the test objective of confirming the structural adequacy of the containment -

for SRV loadings.

The NRC staff has reviewed licensee's submittals of June 6. June 18 and July 3, 1985. The staff's safety evaluation is enclosed. The staff concludes that the licensee's proposal for not completing the previously-approved test program is acceptable, based on the staff's review of the preliminary information provided.

The licensee is still required to submit a final test report in accordance with License Condition 2.C.(34). Should the final data reduction of the test results show significant deviations from similar test results at the Kuosheng Nuclear Plant or significant deviations from design analyses, the licensee is required to either complete the previously approved test program or justify the deviations.

Sincerely.
