Dear Mr. Crow:

Exxon Nuclear Company, Inc. requests an exemption from 10 CFR 70.24(a) for the purpose of performing preventive maintenance on our criticality alarm system.

The current system has been in service for the -life of the plant and some electrical deterioration has taken place.

There will be times during the maintenance period when certain areas of the plant will not be covered by the criticality detection and alarm system.

During these periods, those portions of the plant not covered will be shutdown as f ar as oper.ations with special nuclear material is concerned.

These areas will go.to a storage mode where all special nuclear material will be stored in safe configurations.

It is felt that this approach to system maintenance on a planned basis is much preferable to operation to system f ailure followed by repair on a non-sched-uled basis.

We will plan to perform as much of this work as possible on weekends and off-shifts when the nisnber of employees onsite are minimal.

We do not feel that a criticality is credible with all special nuclear ma-terial in a safe storage configuration; however, we will have Health Physics personnel on-plant during the maintenance outage who will perform area sur-veys.

Enclosed is a check for $150.00 to cover the entire fee.
