Dear Mr. Crow:
It is respectfully requested that Special Nuclear Material License No. SNM 1050 be extended until September 30, 1986 under the conditions established by Amendment No. 5 to the License, dated August 26, 1983. The University of Florida Safety Review Subcommittee for the UFSA Facility covered by this li-cense reviewed the status and conditions on July 12, 1984 and concluded that the safety requirements are fully met and that a license extension "for stor-age only" will provide the time needed to properly plan the future use of the Facility. In several subsequent meetings, most recently June 26, 1985, the Safety Review Subcommittee has reviewed the facility status to assure that li-cense conditions are met and plans for facility usage are proceeding properly. The annual review of facility status is scheduled for August 29, 1985. The present status of the UFSA facility covered by SNM-1050 is as fol-lows: i 1. The fuel is stored in a safe configuration in the Nuclear Research Field Building, as specified in our letter of July 15, 1980. 2. The Facility has an NRC approved Physical Security Plan. The protec-tion provided by this plan and systems exceeds the requirements es-tablished in 10CFR73 for Materials of Low Strategic Significance. The NRC Security. Inspection on June 24-25, 1985 found no security problems with the facility. 3. As reported in a letter dated April 12, 1985, a new fire alarm sys-tem has been installed to provide enhanced automatic fire detection for the fuel storage and facility area. This system was completed in late March,1985, and became fully operational on April 10, 1985. 4. As reported in the letter of July 19, 1984, the facility has been p af partially dismantled and inspected. No structural or other safety- ~ related defects have been found. Parts of the control instrumenta-g tion need repair or replacement. Work is currently underway to pro-g duce an updated Safety Analysis Report for the facility in expecta-6- tion of returning it to service for educationa aq+ ratory training exercises as well as possib.ereseG appic ions, though W 5 $85

The University of Florida Safety Review Subcommittee for the UFSA Facility covered by this license has been updated and continues to review the facility status to assure its continued goed safety record.
