Mr. Lew W. Myers

Vice President - Nuclear

Centerior Service Company

P.O. Box 97, A200

Perry, OH 44nR1

SUBJECT:

II.dPECTION REPORT NO. 50-440/96007(DRS)

Dear Mr. Myers:

.This refers to the inspection conducted by Mr. M. Holmberg of this office on

'

August 12-15, 1996, of activities authorized for your Perry Nuclear Power

Plant, Unit 1, facility. The focus of this inspection was your inservice

inspection efforts. At the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were

discussed with those members of your staff identified in the enclosed report.

4

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within

these areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures,

representative records and interviews with personnel.

In a previous NRC inspection, management involvement and commitment to your

Erosion Corrosion (E/C) effort was considered weak.

The inspector reviewed

Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (formerly E/C) Program changes, which indicated

3

that current industry standards were being met and demonstrated increased

support for this program. The use of " state of the art" equipment to perform

ultrasonic examinations for the Inservice Inspection Program demonstrated an

important element of a quality program.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this

inspection.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of

this letter and the enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.

We will gladly discuss any questions you have concerning these inspections.

Sincerely,

,

In a previous NRC inspection, your Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) program

The use of " state of the art" equipment to perform
