You stated that complete examination coverage of certain welds was not obtained during the end-of-cycle i

7 refueling outage due to obstructions, interference by other components,.or r

j geometric conditions. To perform the Code-required examinations, design i

- modifications or component replacement that provide for complete volumetric

-examination would be required.

j The staff, with technical assistance from its contractor, the Idaho National l

Engineering Laboratory (INEL) has reviewed and evaluated the information i

provided in your February 29, 1996, letter for Relief Request 96-02.

the information provided, relief is granted pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(6)(i) for Request for Relief No. 96-02, Parts 1 through 4 as requested.

By letter dated February 29, 1996, you submitted Request for Relief No. 96-02 Parts 1 through 4 from the first 10-year interval ASME Code examination requirements for Catawba. Nuclear Station, Unit 2.

You stated that complete examination coverage of certain welds was not obtained during the end-of-cycle 7 refueling outage due to obstructions, interference by other components, or geometric conditions. To perform the Code-required examinations, design modifications or component replacement that provide for complete volumetric examination would be required.
