REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR ASME SECTION III CODE COMPONENTS, SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT UNITS 1 AND 2 Your letter of February 25, 1985 (Serial Number ST-HL-AE-1156) provided notification regarding procurement of the subject replacement parts. The NRC staff has reviewed the letter and understands that the situation is as follows:

HL&P for the South Texas Project Units 1 and 2 is experiencing instances where original ASME Section III Code components were purchased in accordance with the Code and N-stamped but the manufacturer has since discontinued his N-stamp and Code Authorization when spare parts need to be procured. For these occasional cases HL&P intends to procure the spare parts form the original manufacturer and to exercise control through the HL&P Quality Assurance Program in conformance with Section XI of the ASME Code. Attachment 1 to the HL&P letter of February 25, 1985 describes the concern and the method of procurement of spare parts.

The staff finds the method of procuring spare components and replacement spare parts for ASME Section III Code components where the manufacturers have discontinued ASME Code Authorizations and N-Type Stamps to be /

acceptable for the South Texas Project Units 1 and 2. This approval is contingent on a HL&P commitment to provide a ASME type certification document certifying all other related Section III requirements have been complied with. In all other respects, the repairs and replacements to ASME Section III Code components shall be in conformance with Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
