RENEWAL INFORMATION REQUEST

Dear Mr. Greco:

i We have recieved by facsimile transmission, dated September 24, 1996, your letter dated June 3,1996, requesting an indication of any factors which might prohibit license renewal in 1998. You indicated that the capital investment for a new source, needed in 1997, would be approximately a quarter of a million dollars and, prior to spending such a large amount, you are trying to identify any such prohibitive factors.

We do not currently see any prohibitive circumstances which would interfere with the renewal process. The NRC staff perform both environmental and safety reviews during license renewal.. The potential for environmental impacts would be reviewed and reported in an environmental assessment, unless the requested action falls under one of the categorical exclusion provisions of

'10 CFR 51.22. The safety review would focus on operational safety and radiation protection activities associated with the use of the licensed material.

The safety review will be reported in a Safety Evaluation Report.

Your com)11ance history will be considered by the technical review staff during tie safety evaluation. All information submitted and reviewed by staff, unless witheid for a specific reason, will be available to the public for review.

4 If you have any questions regarding the information provided in this letter please call Mr. Robert C. Hogg, at (301) 415-6751, or Dr. Michael Tokar, at (301) 415-7251, of my staff.
