Dear Dr. Murley:
This letter is a follow-up of my telephone notification to your department on May 17, 1985 concerning the subject installation.
On May 15,-1985 Louis Allis was informed by Baltimore Gas and Electric personnel at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Generation Plant that a failure had occurred to one of the emergency diesel generator sets manufactured by Colt Industries in 1970. The Electrical Division of Colt was sold in 1973 to a private investor and renamed Beloit Power Systems.
In 1979 Louis Allis purchased Beloit Power Systems and that is the reason Lo is Allis was notified of the failure.
The failure occurred during overspeed tests on the set following a diesel engine overhaul. The circumstances of the test are not known at this time so an evaluation of the cause is not possible. The diesel engine manufacturer is Colt Industries of Beloit, Wisconsin.
Louis Allis has sent a representative to the site to evaluate the failure and a follow-up report will be filed when the information has been received and analyzed.
Sincerely, Ag;21 u H. H. Leusink Vice President, Engineering HHL:sd cc: Louis Allis:
