Dear Mr. Richard:

EJordan ACRS (16)

Subject:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS), Units 1 and 2 - Salem ATWS Events, Generic Letter 83-28, Position 1.2 Post Trip Review - Data and Information Capability Generic Letter 83-28 (GL 83-28) requested licensees of operating reactors, appli-cants for operating licenses and holders of construction permits to respond to certain positions resulting from staff's review of the anticipated transients without scram (ATWS) events at the Salem Nuclear Plant. By letter dated November 2,1984, Mississippi Power and Light Company (MP&L) provided, among other things, responses to GL 83-28 Position 1.2 " Post Trip Review-Data and Information Capabilities" for GGNS, Units 1 and 2.'

The NRC staff has completed a preliminary review to assess the completeness and adequacy of MP&L responses to GL 83-28, Position 1.2. The enclosed draft tech-nical evaluation report (TER) prepared by the staff's consultant provides a tech-nical evaluation representing the staff's initial judgment of the MP&L responses to Position 1.2. Pen and ink changes have been made to the draft TER by the NRC Project Manager for GGNS to make the wording consistent with the staff's approach.

The MP&L responses to Position 1.2 were found to be incomplete in three areas.

In order to meet our review schedule, we would appreciate your cooperation in obtaining additional information that will permit us to complete our review. It would appear that the needed infonnation for GGNS could be obtained in a telephone conference call within one week after you receive the draft TER. The NRC Project '

Manager for GGNS, L. L. Kintner, will be available to arrange an acceptable time for the telephone call.
