JUN 2 81985 DOCKET NO:
70-1257 LICENSEE:
Exxon Nuclear Company, Inc. (ENC)
Richland, Washington
SUBJECT:
AMENDMENT APPLICATION, DATED JUNE 26, 1985, RE: MODIFICATION OF CRITICALITY ALARM MONITOR SYSTEM
Background
ENC is required to maintain a criticality monitor alarm system in an operating condition per 10 CFR 70.24(a).
Discussion In the subject amendment application, ENC requests authorization to shutdown the system to replace major components of the system.
During the replacement activities, all material processing operations in affected areas will be shut-down. Health Physics personnel will conduct surveys in affected areas during the shutdowns.
Conclusion / Recommendation The staff finds that the shutdown of operations minimizes the risk of accidental criticality. Area surveys provide a reasonable alternate measure during the alarm system shutdown. Approval of the exemption to 10 CFR 70.24(a) is recommended.
