Uell I'm not sure that 3
the ef fect of machining off a surface eliminates residual 4
stresses, I've not seen that.

5 I think my comments stands that there should he some G
analysis to determine what they are.
7 O
Dr. Bush, did you have any ccmment on this 8
area?

I am unaware of any, what I would 10 call definitive analysis of residual stresses in either the 11 cam callery or the block top, it's inferential.
12 Too, I guess I can't cet very worried about the top 13 surface in the first place if they machined as,much as I 14 understand they machined -- admittedly this is by inference Y
15 only because I don't have a specific dimension -- I would 16 anticipate what limited residual stresses disappear.
17 The eqm gallery is another matter entirely, I would 18 anticipate that you have the possibility, at least, of 19 substantial residual stresses there because of the geometric 20 configuration and the change in dimension.
21 But I don't think we have any idea of what the 22 level of residual stress is, so about the only thing you 23 could assume conservatively is that there's something 24 below the ultimate or, if you want to define it, there's a
[
25 yield in such material that they're there.
